Biography
Dr. Alyssa Moran is Deputy Director at the Penn Center for Food & Nutrition Policy at the University of Pennsylvania and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Health Policy at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She earned her ScD in Nutrition from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and has conducted research on nutrition policies to reduce diet-related chronic diseases for over ten years. Her research has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Healthy Eating Research Program, and local health departments in Philadelphia and New York. A core focus of Dr. Moran’s work is the translation of academic research into actionable public health policy, and she regularly consults with legislators, government agencies, academic institutions, and non-profit organizations on U.S. food policy issues. As a leading food policy expert, Dr. Moran is regularly interviewed in the national and international news media and has testified in state and local legislative hearings. In 2025, Dr. Moran served on the Healthy Eating Research Expert Panel on Ultra-Processed Foods. She has published extensively on policy solutions to shift the food supply away from ultra-processed foods and towards nourishing, whole foods in academic journals and national news outlets, including JAMA, Nature, Health Affairs, The Hill, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Newsweek, and The Washington Post.
